La Herencia – The Tradition – began with Domingo Ramirez, a tobacco farmer whose family had emigrated from Spain to Cuba. As a member of a tobacco family Domingo Ramirez knew how to grow the finest tobacco for the Cuban cigars which had become the most popular in the world by the mid-1800’s. Born into a tobacco family, Roberto was sent to learn the art of cigar making at a young age. He was apprenticed at a cigar factory where he learned how to choose the best tobacco and to craft the finest cigars in the world. Roberto learned well and became a master torcedo. In Cuba Roberto rose to supervise over 500 rollers for the most well-known cigar manufacturers in the world. Now Roberto, who has rolled cigars at the White House, rolls cigars daily in his family’s cigar factory and store on 7th Avenue in Ybor City. Recognized as one of the ten best cigar rollers in the world, Roberto Ramirez is truly La Herencia.
The Tradition is also Ybor City, where the cigar industry was established in 1885 by Don Vincente Martinez Ybor, a Cuban cigar factory owner, who emigrated to the United States. Over the years Ybor City has been known as the Cigar Capital of the World. At its height Ybor City rollers produced 110 million cigars each year.
